Greater Manchester’s Metrolink tram network is undergoing a £1Bn upgrade to extend lines to the North (Oldham & Rochdale), East (Droylsden) and South (Chorlton) of the city in 2012/13.
MPT – a consortium of Laing O’Rourke, Volkerrail and Thales, were appointed the Phase 3A contract in 2008 including 20 miles of new track and 26 new stops across the city as part of the design, construct and maintain contract.
Multi-disciplinary teams across various Manchester sites use SMART Boards day-in day-out to display technical drawings and annotate over them in SMART digital ink. Annotations are saved into the original PDF drawing for review and distribution to the wider team.
The benefits of the technology used with project collaboration software began to take effect right away – with immediate improvements in information sharing and the ability to keep all team members informed throughout the project.
“The SMART Boards assist the project management teams in communication to stakeholders and the workforce alike. The SMART Boards have improved information transfer, facilitated interactive meetings where the whole workforce can engage in the refining of the proposed methodology and construction details, as well as creating an engaging and informative meeting experience for all team members.”
“I would not hesitate installing a SMART Board in my next project office; however next time I will allow for a SMART Board in each meeting room.”Andy Smith, Section Manager on the East Manchester Line.
